For centuries in Africa, the people were illiterate and depended on oral history. This was not always accurate and contributed to the loss of  knowledge of our true identity. Meanwhile to the descendants of the victims of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, it was a double whammy. Not only did the Slaves not know their identity but they also had no history to leave their descendants.

 

In Africa itself,  the scenario is not all that different to those black people in the Americas. When it comes to knowledge about their history, most Africans have no clue. Yes, we have our oral Histories. But many are nothing short of myths. The genuine ones are also bedevilled with inaccuracies and misinformation. The result of which is many of these Oral Histories read like Fairy tales. Not the kind of stuff intelligent people will regard as their History.

 

Thus, for several years, black people desiring of knowing their roots were frustrated due to the scant details about their origins. In the Americas, black history books only go back to the time of slavery. Then it stops and goes no further. What happened before slavery became a mystery. Thus, there is nothing at all to tell our people in the Americas about their ancestor's origins. Not having this information denied them of their identity.

 

In desperation to know their roots, some turned to speculation to fill in the gaps. The more enterprising ones sought refuge in the history of ancient Egypt. Even so, ancient Egypt is in North East Africa. Therefore, its history does not inform about what went on in other parts of Africa.

 

Most of the victims of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade were from a place in West Africa called the Slave Coast. So to find answers, this is the place to start before linking back to ancient Egypt.
